The company also has a Corporate Social Responsibility programme which is a status report updated with the objectives and the actions being taken for each project.

Isla Be Safe

Isla Be Safe is company’s safety mascot.

Her first outing was to Hardy Mill Primary School in Bolton where she took part in an assembly teaching the school pupils and staff of the dangers of a construction site.

Isla will attend various corporate social responsibility events highlighting the importance of health and safety on site.

School Rocks!

Rock FM invited Parkinson to be interviewed by pupils from Hodgson High School in Poulton-le-Fylde.  The aim of the interview was for the pupils to create and ask questions about Parkinson and other local businesses to allow them to produce a whole radio programme made by themselves.

Practice Interviews

Community Liaison Co-ordinator, Lynda Oakley and Manchester Regional Manager, Steve Williamson have been busy undertaking mock interviews for Year 10 students at a number of Manchester High Schools.

The exercise is to give pupils valuable in interview techniques and experience of organisation interview formats.

Apprentices volunteer at St Thomas’s Primary School

Our apprentices volunteered to work on the delivery of a project at St Thomas’s Primary School in Crumpsall, Manchester. The project involved making the school ready to accept pupils who were moving in on a temporary basis while building work was being carried out at their school at Cravenwood Primary.

As part of their ongoing commitment to Manchester City Council, Parkinsons provided their apprentices with materials and plant to carry out building works, painting and floor laying. The result was a much improved learning environment for the pupils and staff whilst allowing the acceleration of the construction programme at Cravenwood Primary.

“Snow Patrol”

Parkinson staff became “Snow Patrol” helping shift snow during the winter months to ensure that some Manchester schools could function as normal and that children could return to school for exams after days of closures.

“You’re Only Young Twice”

Parkinson are happy to have sponsored The Charity Players presentation of this hilarious comedy by Ron Aldridge with all proceeds going to St Catherines Hospice where we are on site undertaking phased construction works which include:an extension and various conversion to provide new facilities. The play is on from 4th Nov to 7th Nov at the Charter Theatre Preston. www.prestonguildhall.com.

Platt Hall Building and Shaping Futures Event

On 8th July we held a Construction Careers day at Platt Hall where we are currently on site undertaking remodelling and renovation works to Platt Hall Gallery for Manchester City Council. The programme of works is over 34 weeks, has a value of over £1million with completion end of November 2009. The Career Day was in partnership with Cholton High School and Young People of the local community aged 16-19. The objectives of the day were to:

1. Raise the awareness of the construction industry to Y9 and Y10 students;

2. Highlight the diverse opportunities within the construction industry and to;

3. Raise awareness of the construction industry to local 16-19 year olds (who are not in education, employment or traingn-NEET.

For the Y9 and Y10 group we provided an activity worksheet with a series of questions relating to the day. A draw took place from all the correct answers with prizes of a £50 voucher to each of the winners from each age group. We have also organised an Art and Design competition, to design a new form of safety clothing/workwear. The designs will be judged by the Director of Galleries for Manchester City Council, with prizes being awarded. The intention is for the 3 winning designs to be exhibited at the relaunch of the costume gallery when it is opened to the general public once the renovation works have been completed.

Our target audience for the 16-19 category was obtained through local community/youth centres; job centres and the general public. For these individuals there was an opportunity available to them to obtain site based work experience for 1 week on the current Platt Hall project. The aim is to develop and improve their skills so that they are better positioned to take up employment. As an incentive we offered, subject to satisfactory completion of 1 full week of work;

i) Employment and career references;

ii)Vouchers to the value of £100.00 as a “gift” for the completion of 1 week of work.

“I honestly can’t think of any suggestions to improve.”
